MEXICO CITY, Mexico – At war with drug trafficking: During the opening of an exhibition titled “An Army for Peace”, Secretary of the Navy Admiral Francisco Saynez Mendoza declared that the Mexican Navy has caused the drug cartels economic losses of over MX$4.377 billion (US$330.6 million) during the current administration. “The fight against drug trafficking has affected both their bases of operations and their bottom line, which explains the violent reaction against well-known figures”. He went on to say that the armed forces will not relent in their pursuit of President Felipe Calderón’s targets. So far, his administration has eradicated around 2,500 marijuana plantations and seized 44 tonnes of cocaine.
