Blackhawks G Crawford to miss opener

Goaltender Corey Crawford is unlikely to play in the regular-season opener for the Chicago Blackhawks.

Coach Joel Quenneville said it’s really “stretching it” to expect Crawford to be on the ice Oct. 4, when the Blackhawks open the season against the Ottawa Senators.

Cam Ward, who signed a one-year, $3 million deal in the offseason, is likely to get the call in Crawford’s stead.

Crawford played in 28 games last season but was out of action after mid-February. Crawford said at the outset of training camp he was dealing with concussions.

The two-time All-Star was placed on injured reserve with a concussion on Dec. 27 and hasn’t practiced since Feb. 12.
