Cigarette consumption edges down in Indonesia

JAKARTA, Sept. 14 (Xinhua) — The Indonesia government has brought down consumption of cigarette, indicated by the creeping down of the sales of the products.

Directorate of the country’s tax and custom office said on Friday that the sales volume of cigarette went down 5.5 percent to 272 billion pieces from January to June year over year.

The figure has been subdued since 2013, acting director of technical and custom facilities of the office Nugroho Wahyu said.

“The fact is that the sales of cigarette drastically drift down,” Wahyu was quoted by Bisnis media as saying in Nusa Dua on Bali resort island.

The decrease in the sales, the official said, indicates the dropping number of smokers.

Last year, the consumption of cigarette edged down 1.6 percent to 336 billion cigarettes from the expectation, according to the office.
