Consumer watchdog briefs Nats on energy

Australia’s consumer watchdog has cautioned Nationals MPs against getting sidetracked by any single aspect of overhauling the nation’s energy market, saying all elements must be addressed.

The government is fast-tracking a recommendation from the Australian Competition and Consumer Commission to underwrite investment in new power plants, as it seeks support for the National Energy Guarantee.

ACCC chairman Rod Sims, who on Monday briefed Nationals MPs weighing up the government’s signature energy policy, urged them not to get hung up on investment in coal-fired plants or baseload power projects.
