A New Jersey man walking to buy a lottery ticket for this week’s massive Mega Millions jackpot fell and broke his hip, but the trip to the hospital turned into his lucky break.
Earl Livingston, 87, was on his way to buy the ticket on Tuesday when he fell.
He was rushed to the Jefferson Stratford Hospital, where he explained to staffers what happened.
The hospital staff then welcomed Livingston to join their lottery pool, which included a winning $1million Mega Millions ticket, according to WCAU-TV.
Livingston’s niece, Bobbie Mickle, says Livingston told staff he was disappointed about not getting a ticket so they invited him to join the pool with 141 other people.
Mickle says she first thought her uncle was confused when he said he won, but staff later confirmed his story.
Livingston will need a hip replacement, but he says he’s thankful.
‘I want to thank everybody,’ Livingston told the station.
‘I appreciate very much and God bless you and have a happy, happy long life!’
After federal and local taxes each person in the hospital’s pool will receive about $4,800.
