Today’s Birthday, September 27: Australian DJ Alexandra Sholler, aka Alison Wonderland (1986 – ).
Alison Wonderland is a history maker. This year the Australian musician became the highest billed female DJ to ever play America’s famed Coachella music festival.
“It was probably the most special show ever because I was playing mainly my own music and I felt like I took some really big risks. I’m speechless about it still,” she told Triple J following the show.
This wasn’t the first time Wonderland made history. In 2016 she became the first female solo artist to play the main stage of Electric Daisy Carnival in Las Vegas.
Wonderland’s career has seen her collaborate with some of the world’s biggest musicians. She’s worked on tracks with Wayne Coyne of Flaming Lips and remixed the likes of Dua Lipa and Justin Bieber.
She also sings in her tracks, including Aria Platinum single I Want U and Aria Gold single Church.
Wonderland, real name Alexandra Sholler, was born on September 27, 1986.
She grew up in Sydney and trained as a classical cellist – she was the principle cellist of the Sydney Youth Orchestra.
“I literally thought my life path was to be a classical cellist,” she told SBS’s The Feed.
Later she switched to playing bass before taking to the decks.
In 2015, she released her debut album Run, which was nominated for two Aria awards.
Two years later she released her second album Awake, which topped Billboard’s dance chart ahead of Calvin Harris and The Chainsmokers.
While writing the album’s lead single Church, the lyrics started to reveal to herself she was in an unhealthy relationship.
“I was writing Church… and I thought ‘holy s***, I need to be treated better. This is not how anyone should be treated’,” she told AAP.
Wonderland has been honest about the hardships of life on the road, as well as her struggles with anxiety and depression.
“Being a touring artist also has its dark side. With many extreme highs comes many extreme lows happening very closely to one another,” she wrote on Facebook to her fans.
Based in Los Angeles, Alison Wonderland often returns to Australia for numerous festivals, including her own warehouse party tours.
