Vic tyre recycler charged over EPA notices

A Victorian tyre recycling business and a director are facing fines of up to $1.5 million if they’re found guilty of two breaches the state’s Environment Protection Authority rules.

Used Tyre Recycling Corporation Pty Ltd (UTRC) and director Dr Matthew Starr have been charged with the same offences, with the maximum court-imposed penalty for each breach up to $373,104.

The charges follow EPA action to remove a stockpile of about one million tyres from a Stawell site that it alleges would have posed a major hazard for nearby communities if it had caught fire, the authority said in a statement on Monday.
