Just last month, supermarket giants Asda and Morrisons cut prices on both petrol and diesel.

The fuel price cap was announced in order to help motorists afford petrol in the run-up to Christmas.

Now both retailers have said it’s cutting prices at all 320 forecourts as of tomorrow (Tuesday).

From January 8, customers will benefit from up to 1p per litre off unleaded and 2p per litre off diesel.

“It’s our seventh fuel price drop in the last three months”

Asda wrote on their official Twitter: “Our national price cap means motorists will pay no more than 113.7ppl for unleaded and 123.7ppl for diesel. It’s our seventh fuel price drop in the last three months.”

Dave Tyrer, Asda’s senior fuel buyer, said: “As a result of wholesale prices recently falling we’ve been able to pass these savings onto our customers, giving them a good start to the New Year.

“Motorists filling up at Asda will pay no more than 113.7ppl on unleaded and 123.7ppl on diesel.”

Morrisons is also jumping on the bandwagon by cutting the cost of diesel up to 2p a litre and unleaded by up to 1p from tomorrow.

How to save money on fuel all year round:

1. Fill up at busy petrol stations

These stations buy more fuel and tend to take advantage of falling prices.

2. Choose a big station

Stations buy their fuel on the wholesale market, so the big buyers are better at slashing prices.

3. Look for a cluster of stations

When several stations are close together, they’re more likely to drop prices in a bid to lure drivers in.

4. Do your research

If you’re looking for the best deals on fuel, PetrolPrices.com allows motorists to compare costs in your area.

It also lists the average prices, so you know if you’re being ripped off.
