Cave targeting two wins in South Africa after arduous trip – Ireland

Ulster’s Darren Cave insists the province’s trip to South Africa is no safari holiday and that results are the only order of the day.

Cave will start in midfield tomorrow against the Southern Kings (1.15), with Ulster then moving to Bloemfontein before taking on the Cheetahs on Friday.

While the second year of the South African sides in the PRO14 is still a bit of a novelty, especially in terms of travel, Cave wants to make sure his side are returning with two wins.

“At the end of the day it’s not people being away and having a good time,” he said.

“It’s about winning matches, that’s what we’ll be judged on.

“It’s a cool experience. Last year was the first year I had been away in South Africa so it’s new to a lot of the guys and that’s good for them.

“But at the same time it’s about getting results. Ideally we’d like to go home with a couple of wins and that starts on Sunday.”

Ulster finally arrived in Port Elizabeth on Thursday, a full day after leaving Belfast, but Cave won’t be using travel as an excuse for any flat performance tomorrow.

“It’s a bit different to our normal trips away to Wales and Scotland but we were well looked after and now that we’re here we’re feeling good.

“The biggest difference has been loading that early part of the week and then the travel (time).

“But apart from that it’s not actually that different to our normal, the weather is not too warm so it’s not ridiculously different.”
