Kris Jenner opens up about Kanye West and his high-profile White House meeting with President Donald Trump, on Friday’s edition of Ellen.
The Momager of the Kardashians, 62, gave her take on the Grammy-winner’s October 11 Oval Office meeting in which he darted from topics ranging from his diagnosed bipolar disorder, hopes convicted murderer Larry Hoover could be freed, and a modern plane he thought the president should replace Air Force One with, peppering in profanity and profuse praise for the president.
The appearance sparked rampant speculation about Kanye’s mental health, and inspired a Saturday Night Live sketch mocking the exchange.
Ellen said, ‘Let’s just get this out of the way – let’s talk about Kanye … what do you want to say?’
The Keeping Up with the Kardashians star measured her words as she made clear she’s there to help her son-in-law in any way she’s able to.
‘Here’s the thing: Kanye’s an amazing son-in-law, he’s an amazing dad and husband and friend and brother-in-law,’ Kris told Ellen. ‘So we know my son-in-law, Kanye.’
She continued, ‘My job as a mom is to be there for my kids and be supportive and love them … you can’t control what someone else is doing – I can’t always control what any of them do at any time.’
Kris said her main priority when it comes to Kanye is to ‘be there to help him and to be the best version of himself he can be,’ adding, ‘I just want to be there and be supportive and be there if he needs me.
‘You’re always concerned when there’s controversy and drama and things are going on and it’s sometimes worrisome.’
Ellen asked Kris if she saw the White House meeting and asked what she thought about it.
‘It was surprising that he was able to have that … it was very spontaneous and the stuff that they were talking about: When they got to the airplane, I was like, “Oh my gosh, that is so Kanye,”‘ Kris said. ‘He was sharing thoughts and things of himself that I would rather he share some of that stuff privately.’
Kris reinforced the idea that she’s there, first and foremost, as family.
‘I have to be able to show him that I’m here if he needs me, we’re all here if he needs us,’ she said, ‘but he definitely has his own thoughts … and he gets very excited about that.’
She said that Kanye ‘does have different sides to him and this is a side that no one’s seen before.’
Ellen added that she’s known Kanye for a long time, and wants to be a supportive presence for him as she can.
‘He’s in a very vulnerable state right now I think, and I think he needs help,’ Ellen said.
Kris quoted her daughter Kim in regards to how she approaches the situation.
‘It’s a lot – Kim always says, “I can’t control what somebody else does and I feel the same way,’ Kris said. ‘He has a big voice and a lot to say.’
