A former restaurant manager accused of assaulting a man who later had to have part of his testicle removed told gardaí he had never been in a fight in his life.

Raymond Leonard (35), who worked at An Bhialann in Ranelagh, Dublin, met with gardaí voluntarily six months after the incident and said he couldn’t recall the night in question.

When asked if he had squared up to a male and had told a group of people “you guys are f***ed”, Mr Leonard replied: “Absolutely not, I would have remembered that”.

He added that: “I have never been in a fight in my life.”

Mr Leonard, of Sliabh Ban, Ballybane, Co Galway, and with a previous address at Chelmsford Road, Ranelagh, has pleaded not guilty at Dublin Circuit Criminal Court to assaulting Nicholas Devlin causing him harm at Anna Villa, Ranelagh, on August 30, 2015.

Garda Gregory Devoy told Diarmuid Collins BL, prosecuting, the accused denied that he or anyone with him punched or pushed a male against a wall outside McSorley’s pub in Ranelagh.

Mr Leonard identified himself from McSorley’s CCTV on the night, but said: “I don’t remember the incident and I definitely wasn’t involved in any assault, that’s not me.”

The trial has reached closing stages.
