In the second case of animal cruelty in as many days, a family dog has been attacked in its own backyard by intruders and left with horror injuries.
The dog was found with several gashes on its body after a brazen attack by a number of people in the yard of a Northern Territory home on Sunday evening.
Police said the trespassers gained entrance to the yard of a house in Tennant Creek and attacked the pup with an edged weapon, slashing it several times causing lacerations to its body.
The attackers made their escape by climbing the neighbours’ fence.
In a similar attack yesterday, a Maltese cross Jack Russell was stabbed and left for dead in its owners’ backyard by intruders.
Residents at the Melbourne address tried desperately to save their beloved pet but their efforts were thwarted when they discovered the tyres of their car had also been slashed.
By the time they were able to get the injured animal to the vet it was beyond help and had to be euthanised.
