MONTERREY, Mexico – A popular Mexican television host and two companions were kidnapped and subsequently murdered after they left a local TV station on the evening of March 24, officials said this past weekend.
The body of the host, José Luis Cerda, 33, known as “La Gata,” was found in a Monterrey suburb in the morning of March 25. The bodies of the two companions, Juan Roberto Gómez Meléndez and Luis Emmanuel Ruiz Carrillo, were discovered the same day on a highway outside the city. All three men died of gunshot wounds to the head.
Mexico’s National Human Rights Commission reported that 66 journalists have been slain in Mexico since 2000, and a majority of these cases remain unsolved.
