Singer, dancer, judge, presenter – Alesha Dixon has many strings to her bow.
Her latest venture sees her team up with Diversity star Jordan Banjo to host new BBC1 show The Greatest Dancer, devised by fellow Britain’s Got Talent judge Simon Cowell.
“As a massive fan of dance, I’m so excited about the prospect of finding amazing new talent,” Alesha says.
The star has also partnered with The Groovy Food Company to share her love of natural foods and beauty products and is busy planning a new album.
“I’m writing new music. I’m in the studio and very excited,” reveals the 39 year old. “I see it as a blessing to be able to wake up every day and do something that I love. Anyone that gets to do that is very lucky.”
Here’s what Alesha, who is mum to Azura, four, with partner Azuka Ononye, has to stay about motherhood, beauty and wellness – plus her three favourite recipes…
The Groovy Food Company
I don’t want my daughter growing up thinking beauty is blue eyes and long blonde hair…
Beauty comes in many forms, many skin colours, many hairstyles and textures.
It’s hugely important that children see those reflected in books they read and characters they encounter.
When I was little, my mum made me feel that looking different was wonderful and I really want to pass that on.
Equality isn’t about being the same, it’s about being treated the same.
Not a day goes by without me longing for another baby…
I don’t know whether it will happen given my age, but I adore the idea of having a large family and I hope I will be lucky.
The love I feel for Azura is so pure and unconditional that I still stop and catch my breath in awe that Azuka and I have created this perfect little human being.
The main thing is to enjoy her in the present and be philosophical about the future, because what will be will be.
If slaughterhouses had glass walls, we’d all be vegetarians…
I gave up eating meat six years ago and I’ve never looked back.
Animal welfare was at the forefront of my decision, but I wouldn’t ever condemn people who make other choices about what they eat.
I enjoy a tipple!
I like to drink, although not to excess.
Good red wine is my tipple of choice.
You can’t really beat Châteauneuf-du-Pape at a nice restaurant.
“To keep myself feeling and looking my best, I like to keep to a healthy diet and eat the right foods by cutting out refined sugars and processed foods”
I’m obsessed with coconut and love to add it to all dishes…
I’m obsessed with exotic foods like coconut and love that there are so many coconut foods available at the moment.
I love to add coconut to anything, especially dishes I’m making with a Caribbean twist.
The Groovy Food Company also makes an organic coconut flour, which is an essential for cooking at home. Pancakes are a family favourite and we regularly make these with coconut flour.
They taste great and have added nutrients.
Enjoying natural and plant-based food is key to living a healthy and balanced life!
To keep myself feeling and looking my best, I like to keep to a healthy diet and eat the right foods by cutting out refined sugars and processed foods.
I focus on healthy ingredients, such as vegetables and lots of fruit. But you can allow yourself the odd treat and smile.
It’s all about balance!
When I was younger I couldn’t bear to look at myself in the mirror without full make-up…
I always wore hair extensions, false eyelashes and loads of make-up in Mis-Teeq.
I hid behind them.
When I got home and took it all off, I felt diminished and unattractive because that mask gave me confidence.
I only wear make-up for work now, and there’s a glam squad of professionals there to make it happen.
Afterwards, it’s a relief to take it off and be me.
Maybe that’s the main difference between being 20 and 40 – my self-esteem doesn’t depend on a blow-dry.
Coconut oil is my best-kept beauty secret.
Natural products are less harsh on your skin and most people don’t know that coconut oil works really well as an eye make-up remover.
I love to use The Groovy Food Company Organic Virgin Coconut Oil as you would use a regular cleansing oil.
I also do a body scrub once a week.
I mix the oil with its Organic Coconut Sugar – they blend really well together and it’s so quick and easy to make.
Once a week, I make a DIY hair mask out of 2-4 tablespoons of the oil and massage it into my hair. I leave it in for 45 minutes and then wash it out.
It is great for moisturising hair, giving a healthy shine and protecting from split ends.
Being a mum is my greatest joy and my biggest challenge…
Every day I try to be the best, most patient version of myself.
It’s a struggle sometimes but, hand on heart, I can say Azura has made me a better person.
Because of her I try to rein in my busyness and be more calm and mindful, although it’s not always easy.
Azuka is so loving towards her – towards us both.
I love watching them together and seeing that wonderful bond growing stronger every day.
Cooking with natural ingredients is so important to inspire Azura to enjoy a balanced diet.
I am always conscious of my daughter’s wellbeing and mindset.
A key way to ensuring she stays healthy is by making sure we always cook with unrefined ingredients, so that she learns to enjoy a balanced, natural diet.
We try to stay away from processed and refined foods and choose alternatives that are more natural.
For example, I always use a coconut oil rather than vegetable oil when cooking or frying.
