DAVID DE GEA is ‘deeply frustrated’ with Manchester United’s failure to offer him a new contract next season.
De Gea has been a star performer between the sticks for several seasons and is one of the club’s most valuable assets.
But with the player able to walk out of Old Trafford for nothing in 18 months time, United are now in a desperate race to get him tied down long-term.
However it’s not proving easy, with De Gea disgruntled at the way the Premier League side have handled negotiations over extending his stay.
Journalist Duncan Castles issued an update on the situation on the latest episode of the Transfer Window Podcast.
“He knows his status, he knows his value”
He said: “De Gea’s been elected as the best at the club for the past four years, there’s an argument he’s been the best player at the club for all of those five years.
“He knows his status, he knows his value. A player of that level, who clubs of the same stature as Manchester United, and some with deeper pockets in what they are prepared to spend on salary, are interested. Paris St-Germain, for example.
“You have to renew them when you get the opportunity.
“I know De Gea was deeply frustrated last season that United made no effort to renew his contract at a point at the start of the season where he was interested in a new deal and was ready to sign one if the terms were correct.
“Instead they left it and when they’ve actually entered negotiations with De Gea over a new contract, the offers they have made have not been on the same level as the amount they’ve paid to Paul Pogba and Alexis Sanchez.
“And De Gea’s response quite understandably has been ‘I am the best player at this club, I expect to be paid the best wage. If you are not going to pay it I’ll run my contract down and leave on a free transfer in a year-and-a-half’s-time and I will get that money I deserve from the next club I pay for’.”

Fellaini and Dalot remain out with injuries sustained during the international break, but Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez are back to full fitness. United boss Mourinho did not provide an update on Phil Jones, who last featured for the club on September 25.
