Former pub and Grade II listed building goes on the market for £8million

The perfect property for beer fans has gone on the market for £8m – a former pub that has London’s most famous brewery as a neighbour.

Red Lion House, in Chiswick, west London, was originally built as a pub more than 300 years ago for Thomas Mawson’s brewery, which went on to become Fuller’s Brewery.

It was a pub for more than 200 years and in the 18th and 19th centuries, the pub would have been a hive of activity with boat crews and carters as regular customers.

It has an incredible wine cellar with a barrelled ceiling that is perfect for hosting parties if the new owners want to play publican.

The house offers 5,428 sq ft of accommodation over four floors with an entrance hall, three reception rooms, two kitchens, and an office.

It also boasts four bedrooms – one with a walk-in wardrobe – and two bathrooms.

What’s more, the 1st floor lounge stretches across the entire first floor and has a balcony which offers stunning views over the Thames estuary 

On the first floor the large living room stretches the width of the house – almost 35ft – making it perfect for entertaining and for enjoying the spectacular river views from the balcony.

At the back of the property is a winter garden conservatory and garden and the property also has a river garden across the road from the house.

It was licensed as a pub by 1722 but lost its licence in 1915 when it was then converted into a residential town house.

Beer has been brewed on Fuller’s historic Griffin Brewery site since the 17th century and founder Thomas Mawson had this property built as the inn in the early 1700s. 

John Bird Fuller took over the brewery from his father, also called John Fuller, and got Henry Smith and John Turner on board, creating Fuller, Smith & Turner’s Brewery in 1845.

The pub has been a private residence for the last century but the brewery’s founder is still honoured in a pub attached to the brewery round the corner from this house, The Mawson Arms.

Red Lion House, is Grade II listed, and has been refurbished and maintained by the current owner over the past 40 years.

Francis Stickney, from River Homes, said: ‘There are not many houses on Chiswick Mall and it tends to be somewhere people don’t really leave so properties don’t come up very often and there is obviously a huge demand for them.

‘The house has an interesting history as it was once a pub linked to the Fuller’s Brewery, which is still very much operating.

‘The brewery has always been part and parcel of the area. Unusually, it is still owned by the family and they are good friends with the people who live on Chiswick Mall.

‘This house would have quite a bustling place when it was a pub, but now it’s a peaceful home, very tranquil.

‘The owners have spared no expense making the wine cellar, it’s better than it would have looked in its early pub days.

‘And the other striking feature is the living room on the first floor, which is the whole width of the house and has the most spectacular views of the river.

‘The living room is perfect for parties in the summer and the wine cellar is perfect for entertaining in the winter.

‘There’s also a lovely winter garden at the back and a river garden to the side at the front, which is almost like being on your own island.

‘I don’t think it will stay on the market long, these properties change hands rarely and quickly.’
