Mourinho is liked by president Florentino Perez and he wants him back following his spell at the Bernabeu earlier in his career.

The Portuguese joined the Spanish giants in 2010 after guiding Inter Milan to the treble, but wasn’t able to repeat the feat in Madrid.

He won the La Liga title and Copa del Rey during his time in charge and Perez is keen for him to return and try to claim more silverware.

And he’s monitoring Mourinho’s situation at Manchester United, with the prospect of the ex-Chelsea man being sacked and therefore available for no compensation not ruled out.

“Florentino Perez is monitoring that situation carefully”

Duncan Castles

Journalist Duncan Castles explained the situation on the latest episode of The Transfer Window podcast.

He said: “You have to ask, were Mourinho’s situation at Manchester United which is still very open, could go one way or another, were results to decline, were Ed Woodward and the Glazers to make the decision that they were going to dismiss Jose Mourinho, I would think that the opportunity to go straight back into work at a club of the same stature, the same financial stature, with more European trophies to its name – substantially (more) than Manchester United – be offered to him, he’d find it very difficult to turn down.

“I think Florentino Perez is aware of that, and Florentino Perez is monitoring that situation carefully.

“And if that possibility was to fall into his lap where he didn’t have to go through the torturous, hellish process involved in getting Daniel Levy to release a player, a manager or a coach and he had the opportunity to take Mourinho at no cost he would take that opportunity.”

Bournemouth vs Man Utd

Antonio Valencia, Marouane Fellaini and Diogo Dalot remain absent as Manchester United travel to Bournemouth.

United captain Valencia has been absent for a month, with manager Mourinho confirming a knee injury will keep him out of today’s trip to the south coast.

Fellaini and Dalot remain out with injuries sustained during the international break, but Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez are back to full fitness.

United boss Mourinho did not provide an update on Phil Jones, who last featured for the club on September 25.

Provisional squad: De Gea, Romero, Grant, Young, Darmian, Shaw, Rojo, Smalling, Bailly, Lindelof, Pogba, McTominay, Herrera, Mata, Matic, Pereira, Fred, Lingard, Sanchez, Chong, Lukaku, Martial, Rashford.
