LIVERPOOL defenders Virgil van Dijk and Joe Gomez could become one of the all-time great defensive partnerships.
That’s according to Arsenal hero and former England centre-back Martin Keown.
Van Dijk and Gomez kept Arsenal at bay for 82 minutes of their pulsating clash last night.
But Alex Iwobi’s through ball sliced Liverpool’s defence apart and Alexandre Lacazette provided the finish to square the game at 1-1.
Liverpool had led for 20 minutes at the Emirates but the Dutchman had multiple chances to open to the scoring himself.
Not content with defending, Van Dijk is a serious aerial threat opponents’ goal and was only thwarted by the post and Bernd Leno’s heroics last night.
Keown was not cut from the cloth of cultured defending as the ex-Southampton star who cost Jurgen Klopp £75m.
But he certainly recognises Van Dijk’s class as well as the unbounded potential of his young team-mate Gomez.
“It’s already a phenomenal partnership,” the former England international said on BT Sport.
“It could be one of the all-time great Premier League centre-half partnerships.
“They are that good – they’ve got everything in their locker.”
Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand added that the duo will be crucial to Liverpool’s hopes of a title challenge.
And he backed up Keown’s statement by claiming that both Van Dijk and Gomez are in the league’s top five defenders.
“That defensive triangle is massive for Liverpool in terms of winning trophies going forward,” he said.
“Van Dijk and Gomez have tremendous recovery pace and positional sense – and they’re only going to get better.
“Van Dijk especially is at the stage of his career where he needs trophies.
“For me, Gomes and him are two of the top five defenders in the league.”
