LIVERPOOL’s Premier League title chances would be severely harmed if they lost to Manchester City on Sunday.
That’s the view of Reds legend Jamie Carragher, who says that his former club cannot let City get away from them if they want to win their first title for 28 years.
City are looking to retain their Premier League crown for the first time but the Reds have emerged as their most likely threat in recent months.
Jurgen Klopp’s side, who narrowly missed out on winning the Champions League title last season, spent big in the summer to close the gap on City and they have started the new campaign in style.
But so have City, and both teams are locked on 19 points at the summit of the Premier League after winning six and drawing one of their seven matches so far.
“I don’t feel Liverpool, or any side that have title aspirations, can afford to let City get away from them”
The Reds will be looking to draw on last season’s meetings between the two teams, where the Merseyside club won three of their four meetings.
But it was Pep Guardiola’s men who stormed to the title, breaking several records along the way, including finishing with 100 points.
And Carragher insists his former club have it all to do again this season, saying he feels it is more important that Liverpool take the three points than City on Sunday.
“Without a doubt Liverpool (it’s more important to win),” he told Sky Sports. “Liverpool are at home and still have to go to City at some stage.
“I don’t feel Liverpool, or any side that have title aspirations, can afford to let City get away from them.
“If City took four points out of six against Liverpool I don’t think there’s any chance that Liverpool win the league.
“It is a vital game for Liverpool.
“I think the top six head-to-heads are vital in terms of the title and top four, but in terms of these two I think it’s going to be tight, and that means Liverpool have to do well in the two league games against City.”
But Carragher says he believes the Reds are more than capable of coming away from Anfield with the three points because of Klopp’s record against Guardiola.
The German has won seven of 14 meetings with the former Barcelona boss, with two draws.
“I think Liverpool are the one team in the Premier League who believe they can actually beat City,” he added.
“I think most of the division – certainly the other top teams – hope they can beat City but I think Liverpool will be going into the game at Anfield believing they’ll win the game.
“It will be a very tough game for both sides but with the way they’re set up and the way they play, Jurgen Klopp seems to have Pep Guardiola’s number, if you like, since he’s come.
“I think for Liverpool, if they could win it would be huge – points-wise, of course, but I think psychologically in terms of believing they can win the title.”
The game kicks off at 4.30pm on Sunday.
