LIVERPOOL boss Jurgen Klopp has assembled a team reminiscent of the great Barcelona side that swept all before them.
That’s the view of Reds legend Graeme Souness, who says that while the front-three of Mohamed Salah, Roberto Firmino and Sadio Mane have the wow factor, it is the team as a whole that is now impressive.
Klopp’s side continued their perfect start to the Premier League season after beating Tottenham 2-1 at Wembley.
Goals from Georginio Wijnaldum and Firmino either side of half-time helped the Reds see out the result and despite Erik Lamela’s stoppage-time strike, it was a comfortable afternoon for the team.
Before the season began, many tipped Liverpool to be the one team who could push champions Manchester City close this year, and it seems likely that will be the case.
“If they can keep it going, whoever finishes in front of Liverpool his season will win the league”
With five wins out of five, the Anfield-club sit top of the league with Chelsea, who have also won all of their matches under new boss Maurizio Sarri.
Earlier in the week Souness claimed that Klopp’s Reds team was the best he had seen since they last won a league title in 1990.
And the Scot, who won the European Cup three times with the club, says the current squad has comparisons with the great Barcelona in their heyday.
“You go back to Barcelona at their very best, you sat back and enjoyed their passing and moving football with their magicians like (Lionel) Messi and (Andres) Iniesta and Xavi – but it was easy to overlook their work-rate,” Souness told Sky Sports after the game with Spurs.
“It’s the same with this Liverpool team. You admire the goals and creativity but can overlook the intensity they play with when they don’t have the ball.
“If they can keep it going, whoever finishes in front of them this season will win the league.
“The front three put the ball under pressure every minute. They nick the ball high up the pitch, they hunt in packs and they all know what they are doing.
“They are all a goal threat but in this game they showed another side and worked their socks off. You can say Tottenham didn’t play well but a fundamental reason for that is they weren’t given any time and space to play.”
And Souness reaffirmed his midweek statement that he thinks the current team is the best since they last won the title.
“This is the best Liverpool team since they won the league,” he added.
“I think they’ve got a great chance to win the league. City are fabulous, they’ve got equally fabulous players, and I think it’ll be nip and tuck all the way through if that’s the intensity Liverpool can play with.”
After a 3-0 win over Fulham, Pep Guardiola’s City sit two points behind Liverpool in the standings.
The champions have won all of their games so far except for only drawing with newly-promoted Wolves.
The two teams will meet for the first time this season on October 10 at Anfield in what is sure to be a blockbuster clash.
