Man killed in ‘nightmare’ shark attack off Cape Cod beach where great whites roam

0

A MAN has died after being attacked by a shark off a Cape Cod beach in the US state of Massachusetts.

The shark struck in waters around 300 yards off Newcomb Hollow Beach in Wellfleet at 2:25pm local time (7.:25pm GMT) on Saturday.

Wellfleet Police Lt Michael Hurley confirmed the victim, a man in his mid-20s, died of his injuries following the attack, the first fatal shark incident in Massachusetts since 1936.

Emergency responders attempted to perform CRP on the man, who is thought to have suffered injuries to his lower body in the attack.

The man, who has not been named, was rushed to Cape Cod Hospital in Hyannis, where he was later pronounced dead, though the extent of his injuries are not known.

The beach was closed to swimmers but the type of shark involved in the attack is not yet known.

Great white sharks – one of the ocean’s most feared predators – are found in waters off Cape Cod.

The population of the ferocious Apex predators is reported to have risen dramatically in recent years due to a surplus of seals, which they feed on.

Numerous shark sightings have been reported in the Cape Cod area this summer, including several involving great whites.

“I saw my worst nightmare unfold here”

Eyewitness Joe Booth

Eyewitness Joe Booth described horrifying scenes as the man was pulled from the looking like he was in “a world of hurt”.

“I saw my worst nightmare unfold here,” he told Cape Cod Times.

“Some gentleman got bit by a shark – we never wanted this to happen, ever, anywhere.”

He said he saw a “giant eruption of water” and a “lot of trashing” at the time of the harrowing attack.

He added: “You could tell by the body language of the guys in the water something wasn’t right.”

The attack comes just weeks after a man from New York was severely injured in a shark attack on August 15 at Long Nook Beach in Truro.

He suffered puncture wounds to the leg and torso when he was bitten by a shark around 30 yards off the beach.

The most recent shark attack before Truro happened in 2012, when Christopher Myers suffered deep lacerations on both legs after an encounter with a great white.

But until today, there hadn’t been a fatal shark attack in Massachusetts since 1936, which happened at Hollywood Beach in Buzzards Bay.
