Police warning in Spain as sextortion blackmailers threaten to expose web users’ use of porn sites

Spanish police have warned of a massive sextortion campaign to expose web users’ porn site history unless they cough up thousands of euros.

Blackmailers are sending emails to their targets in which they reveal victims’ personal passwords and claim their computers have been hacked.

‘They claim to be in possession of personal intimate pictures or videos obtained through the computer’s webcam when the user was visiting pornographic sites,’ police said in a statement.

They then demand payment in bitcoin or other virtual currencies within 24 hours to stop them from publishing them.

The cyber criminals threaten to send videos to victims’ families unless they pay up. They’re typically asking for between 350 and 2,500 euros.

Police recommend that targets of the shakedown stay calm and refuse to pay because the blackmailers are usually bluffing and have no video because no computers were actually hacked.

Police said they were receiving around 100 messages per day flagging possible cases.
