Roberto Firmino eye injury: Shock pictures show extent of Liverpool star’s gruesome clash

ROBERTO FIRMINO suffered a gruesome eye injury during Liverpool’s win at Tottenham today.

And pictures of the Brazilian’s clash with Spurs defender Jan Vertonghen show the horrific extent of the incident.

Firmino doubled Liverpool’s lead at Wembley following Georginio Wijnaldum’s opener as Jurgen Klopp’s side secured a 2-1 win.

But Firmino had to be taken off early after an ugly clash with Vertonghen.

The Belgian defender caught his Brazilian opponent in the face while competing for the ball.

And images show that Vertonghen’s index finger went nearly an inch into Firmino’s eye socket.

Liverpool said in a club statement that Firmino ‘will be assessed’ after the nasty injury and is now a doubt for next week’s Champions League tie with Paris St-Germain.

Klopp said: “I’m not sure, but there may be an injury with Roberto, we don’t know exactly in the moment. It’s something with his eye, we will see.

“I didn’t see it back. I only saw the situation from around 60 yards. I have no clue what exactly happened.

“But it’s something with the eye and for sure in the moment it’s not comfortable for him. We will see.”

Liverpool kick off their Champions League campaign by hosting French champions PSG on Tuesday before their Premier League clash with Southampton next Saturday.

The Reds then face two ties with Chelsea the following week, one in the EFL Cup at Anfield before a league trip to Stamford Bridge.

Firmino, who was seen bleeding on the pitch at Wembley, will undergo tests to see if he’ll be out of action during a hectic end to September for Klopp’s side.

While Firmino’s injury was a blow to Liverpool, Klopp was delighted with his side’s display in north London.

The German boss said: “That was very, very good. It was an intense job to do and the boys did it.

“We deserved to win that game today. Over 85 minutes we were really dominant. With and without the ball we caused them massive problems.

“The things they usually do usually work, but they didn’t today. The boys stuck to our plan today and it was really good – everybody worked so hard in what was a good performance.

“That was our best game of the season and the performance was much better than the result.

“That was a tough game. Two good teams, two big teams, football as it should be. We won the game and if we win at Tottenham it’s a big result.

“The players did the job and they worked unbelievable hard, and I’m really proud of them.”
