It’s official. The Flash has a new suit in Season 5. The first look comes straight from Grant Gustin’s Instagram account. A poster for the upcoming season features the brand new costume.
The actor also posted a second behind-the-scenes photo that gives a closer look at the suit’s material. “This is my personal favorite thus far, when the cowl is down,” Gustin commented on the post, responding to a fan asking about the old suit. “I dug that one too, but no zipper in the front and no leather creates a much more streamlined look.”
The reveal comes after a leak stirred the fanbase for days. A test photo surfaced showing Gustin wearing a new suit. While the (now deleted) image was real, the suit on display was a very early prototype. The official suit looks similar to the leak, though it’s considerably more polished as Gustin said on Wednesday.
“Some things need work and they will be worked on. We’ll get there,” Gustin said in response to the leak. “I love the suit that has been designed for me, and I think when everyone sees it in its entirety, you will love it too. Things have been adjusted since that leaked shot was taken, and more things will continue to be adjusted until it feels right.”
The most noticeable difference is the lack of chin strap. There’s also no zipper, and a lot less gold. The Season 4 suit had gold bolts on the arm and boots, but the only visible gold on the new costume is the belt, ears and emblem. The new suit also features what appears to be a softer, synthetic fabric, which gives the suit an entirely different look from all previous designs.
The overhaul makes sense, considering this new suit’s origins. In the trailer for Season 5 revealed at San Diego Comic Con, Barry’s daughter from 30 years in the future gifts him what comic book readers know as a “Flash Ring.” She calls it a “backup suit” and a “Total fan-favorite.” The ring allows Barry to activate a suit in an instant, and it would be fairly odd to see a suit made of leather materialize out of such a high-tech device. In the comic books, the Flash Ring suit is made of teflon, which is easy to compress.
Grant Gustin teased the suit will debut in the premiere episode during an interview with Comic Book at SDCC. “There’s one thing that happens in the first episode as well, that will be a little teaser of the trailer today,” Gustin said. “So it’s something that I’ve been wanting, and that I know some fans have been wanting for a long time. So we’re doing a couple cool things.”
