Recall action: EHEC bacteria in this organic vegetable – Do not consume under any circumstances!

Bioland supplier recalls various types of sprouted vegetables
The Federal Office of Consumer Protection and Food Safety is currently warning against EHEC germs that are present in various types of organic vegetables. The sprout manufacturer Healthy Powerfood GbR, which was awarded the Bioland seal of approval, recalls several sprout products that were sold in organic shops, among others.

According to a warning of the consumer protection portal “” the following products of the company Healthy Powerfood GbR from Worms are recalled with the minimum durability date 29 October 2018:

Alfalfa sprouts
Spoked salad mix
Gourmet sprouts
Sprouts On Bread

Consumption is strongly discouraged
Verotoxin-producing Escherichia coli germs (VTEC) were detected in the sprouts as part of product controls. These pathogens are highly infectious. Ten to 100 germs are sufficient to induce diarrhoeal diseases, some of which are dramatic. The sprouts were sold in the organic shops “basic” and “Denns Biomarkt”, among others. The German states of Baden-Württemberg, Bavaria, Hesse, North Rhine-Westphalia and Rhineland-Palatinate are affected by the recall.

EHEC bacteria can trigger bloody diarrhoeal diseases
As reported by the Bavarian State Office for Health and Food Safety, pathogenic enterohaemorrhagic Escherichia coli germs, EHEC for short, are considered to be one of the most common causes of intestinal diseases with diarrhoea worldwide. Only recently another recall campaign for cheese due to EHEC bacteria was carried out. Infection can lead to inflammation of the colon and bloody diarrhoea, known as haemorrhagic colitis.

How does an EHEC infection progress?
EHEC bacteria cause diarrhoeal diseases in humans, some of which can lead to life-threatening complications. EHEC symptoms include severe bloody diarrhea, abdominal pain, abdominal cramps, nausea, vomiting and fever. A disease lasts an average of eight days and then often improves abruptly. An EHEC infection must be reported in accordance with § 7 of the Infection Protection Act.

How dangerous are EHEC pathogens?
Especially in infants and children under the age of six, the elderly or immunocompromised persons, a so-called haemolytic-uremic syndrome can develop after the disease. This causes damage to the blood vessels, red blood cells and kidneys. As a result, patients are often dependent on dialysis. Neurological disorders and damage to organs such as the pancreas and heart can also occur. In the worst case, a fatal multiorgan failure can occur.

When should I see a doctor?
Anyone who has eaten Healthy Powerfood GbR sprouts with a shelf life of 29 October 2018 and subsequently suffers from one or more of the symptoms mentioned should seek medical treatment quickly and mention the consumption of the sprouts. “It does not make sense to seek medical treatment without symptoms,” the manufacturer writes in a press release on the recall.
