Deliveroo is to overhaul the way it displays food allergy content on its menus as the restaurant industry braces for tougher laws following the death of a teenage girl.
From December, the online food delivery firm will introduce a new system that allows restaurants on its platform to highlight allergen content on its app, claiming to be the first to provide dish by dish information.
In addition, Deliveroo will immediately make existing allergen warnings more prominent and make it easier for customers to contact restaurants with concerns.
It comes after the death of Natasha Ednan-Laperouse, who ate a Pret A Manger sandwich containing sesame seeds, to which she was allergic.
This week, her parents met Environment Secretary Michael Gove, who told them that “Natasha’s Law” – aimed at enforcing stricter food labelling rules – could be introduced next year.
Dan Warne, managing director of Deliveroo UK and Ireland, said: “This is great news for consumers who want more information about the food they are ordering online.
“Overhauling our menus is not a simple task, but customers with allergies need this extra transparency before they order, which is why we are working with our restaurant partners to make it happen.”
Chains such as Tortilla, Tommi’s Burger Joint, Mildreds, Chipotle, YO! Sushi, PizzaExpress, Pho and Byron have all committed to adding allergen content to their Deliveroo menus via the new tool.
