ARSENAL manager Unai Emery insists Mesut Ozil won’t be sold this month.
But his absence from the matchday squad at West Ham today has left more questions surrounding his position at the club.
The £350,000-a-week playmaker has trained all week with the Gunners.
However, Ozil’s performances in training and on the pitch did not warrant him a place in the 18 at the London Stadium.
It is not the first time the World Cup winner has been axed by Emery, and Arsenal failed to break West Ham down without the 29-year-old.
Teenager Declan Rice struck home shortly after the break to give the hosts all three points as West Ham beat Arsenal 1-0.
And the result has put a huge dent in Arsenal’s hopes of a top-four finish.
Emery was asked about why he left Ozil out of the squad when he had little attacking options on the bench.
Arsenal just had young striker Eddie Nketiah, with 59th-minute substitute Aaron Ramsey the most forward-thinking player otherwise.
“He is not one player that is for sale”
Emery said: “Yes, true. But also we have enough players to win today and impose our game plan and our tactics and quality against West Ham.
“But also respect to West Ham, they have good players, with their supporters here they feel strong and maybe for the match, some players like attacking players can help but we had enough with these players.”
Pressed further on why he has continued to axe Ozil from certain games, the Arsenal boss explained: “I decided that the players I have here were the best for this match.
“We have won with him, we have lost with him, he is not one player that is for sale.
“We know we can’t lose him.”
One reporter then said: “You understand the interest in him as he far and away the best paid player at the club? What does it say that he might not play every game?”
Emery answered: “Yes but I can say he is working this week normally.
“I just said we have won and lost with him and today the players here were the players who deserved to be in this match and with them we can win, but we lost.
“I will continue to work with every player because they are all important but today the decision was to come with these players.”
