MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho has revealed why Romelu Lukaku has been left out of his side’s visit to Bournemouth today.
The Belgian was benched against former side Everton last weekend but did come off the bench in the closing stages.
Lukaku was not spotted by photographers as United boarded their plane to Bournemouth yesterday afternoon, sparking speculation that he had been left out.
And at 11.30am today it was confirmed the striker was left out completely.
Ahead of today’s clash at the Vitality Stadium, Mourinho explained why Lukaku is set to miss out again.
“In training yesterday, after the press conference, he felt something that needs to be studied in the next couple of days”
“In training yesterday, after the press conference, he felt something that needs to be studied in the next couple of days,” he said.
“So, Lukaku has not come and we decided to start with Alexis.
Speaking on Friday, Jose Mourinho spoke of the player’s recent snub.
When asked why Lukaku wasn’t involved last week, the coach joked that a Manchester Evening News journalist would be able to give some insight.
But Mourinho didn’t reveal any injury problem for the forward.
“A very good week. We work tactically, we improve some fitness levels. We improve some of the players that were almost there but not there – Lingard, Alexis – these kind of players, that were already available but not yet at a good level,” Mourinho said.
“We trained with our kids too.
“They mixed with us on one of the days, which is an amazing feeling for them.
“Dalot and Fellaini are still out. The only one that went one step behind was Antonio Valencia with some problem in his knee. But Lingard and Alexis, now i can say ‘ready.’”
Lukaku has struggled in front of goal of late, which led to his Old Trafford snub last week.
The Belgian has received criticism of late due to his goalscoring form.
