MANCHESTER UNITED will not discover the extent of Romelu Lukaku’s muscle injury until Monday.
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho sparked speculation by leaving the Belgian striker out of his match-day squad for the Premier League clash at Bournemouth.
Mourinho revealed before kick-off that Lukaku was not at the Vitality Stadium due to an injury suffered in training on Friday.
He now faces a race against time to prove his fitness before Wednesday’s Champions League trip to Juventus.
Speaking after the 2-1 win against Bournemouth, Mourinho said: “I have to wait until Monday.
“He needs these couple of days. It was something in training. We don’t know – a muscle problem – and we have to wait a little bit.”
Lukaku has found goals hard to come by this term, failing to score since mid-September.
He was dropped to the bench for last weekend’s win against Everton, and Mourinho admitted his confidence is low.
Speaking after the Toffees clash, Mourinho said: ”The reason is, he is playing lots of matches and lately, not just not scoring goals, but also not showing lots of confidence.
“Sometimes we decide that the best thing for the players is to not be on the pitch, to be protected and away from the initial pressure.
“If he comes into the game later, he will come with a positive feeling of trying to make a difference and be back to normality because normally with Romelu, he scores lots of goals.
“So I think he is under pressure a little bit because he is not doing that.”
Lukaku was not missed against Bournemouth as Marcus Rashford’s late goal secured a 2-1 win at the Vitality Stadium.
Anthony Martial had cancelled out Callum Wilson’s opener for the Cherries.
Mourinho was pleased by his side’s comeback after a “disaster” in the first half.
He said: “The second half was much better. We created lots of chances and deserved to score before the 92nd minute.”
