MANCHESTER UNITED boss Jose Mourinho has been busy spying on new players ahead of the January transfer window opening.
United made just three signings during the summer – leaving Mourinho frustrated.
He wants a new centre-back on board but ended up with just full-back Diogo Dalot, back-up keeper Lee Grant and midfielder Fred.
And Mourinho’s been busy preparing for his next chance to get players on board by checking out potential arrivals in the flesh.
Journalist Duncan Castles revealed the news on the latest episode of The Transfer Window podcast.
“He is pushing Ed Woodward, the board, the Glazers to get reinforcements as soon as possible”
Castles said: “He is pushing Ed Woodward, the board, the Glazers to get reinforcements as soon as possible, to be allowed to sign the high-quality, experienced leader centre-back he’s been asking (to sign) for months and months and trying to do in the January window.
“The club has come up with a list of proposals for the position that Mourinho is not convinced about.
“He’s been scouting some of them in person and proposing other players.”
Mourinho has Eric Bailly, Chris Smalling, Victor Lindelof, Phil Jones and Marcos Rojo available as his centre-back options.
But it remains to be seen if he’ll get to strengthen the position in the New Year with the player he wants.
Smalling and Lindelof could start this afternoon when United face Bournemouth.
Antonio Valencia, Marouane Fellaini and Dalot remain absent for the clash with the Cherries at the Vitality Stadium.
United captain Valencia has been absent for a month, with manager Mourinho confirming a knee injury will keep him out of today’s trip to the south coast.
Fellaini and Dalot remain out with injuries sustained during the international break, but Jesse Lingard and Alexis Sanchez are back to full fitness.
United boss Mourinho did not provide an update on Jones, who last featured for the club on September 25.
Provisional squad: De Gea, Romero, Grant, Young, Darmian, Shaw, Rojo, Smalling, Bailly, Lindelof, Pogba, McTominay, Herrera, Mata, Matic, Pereira, Fred, Lingard, Sanchez, Chong, Lukaku, Martial, Rashford.
