TRANSFER NEWS LIVE: Updates as the January window gets close to opening with Manchester United, Arsenal, Liverpool and Chelsea all looking to strengthen.
Mourinho takes Martial U-turn
Manchester United boss Jose Mourinho has performed an about-turn and urged bosses to secure the long-term future of Anthony Martial.
Mourinho said: “I don’t belong to the discussions of contracts. To be honest I don’t even know their contracts in the sense of numbers and I’m really happy with that, not participating in these kind of discussions.
“But obviously I hope they will agree. Obviously I hope. One thing is that he’s a talented player that everybody knows he is.
“Everybody knows since he was in Monaco that he is a talented player. Another thing is a talented player with consistency and understanding what a football match is in the globality.
“When you reach that level, or when you are almost reaching that level, is when you become a top player. One thing is top talent, another is a top player.
“He is now much closer to being a top player. Obviously I would like him to stay. I know the club wants him very much to stay. Hopefully he is going to stay.”
Giggs wants Ramsey to go get games
Wales manager Ryan Giggs simply wants star midfielder Aaron Ramsey to get regular game time moving forward.
Starsport understands Manchester United and Liverpool are looking at Ramsey, who is set to leave Arsenal in 2019.
His contract expires in the summer, making him available on a free transfer.
And Giggs has told Sky Sports: “All I can say is that when he comes to camp with us he’s always ready, he’s a great professional and this contract situation has never affected him so far.
“Of course you want your players settled but from my point of view it’s just a case of him playing regularly, that’s all you want as an international manager.
“Wherever that may be is obviously out of my hands but I just want him playing.
“He won’t be short of offers as he’s a talented player. He’s one of those players that, if he plays a full season, will get 10-15 goals from midfield and that’s a very attractive player to have in any side.”
Arsenal make Fabregas decision
Arsenal will not look into re-signing Cesc Fabregas, according to reports.
The Chelsea star is out of contract at the end of the season and in an interview with Spanish outlet Marca he hinted he could be interested in a return.
Fabregas made his name under Arsene Wenger at the Gunners.
The Spaniard would move to Barcelona before returning to the Premier League with Chelsea.
But Fabregas is out of contract at the end of the season.
The 31-year-old has been linked with Arsenal since his comments but Mundo Deportivo claim Emery is not interested in signing the midfielder.
Mourinho on Man Utd plans
Jose Mourinho refused to talk about his January transfer plans when asked in a press conference today.
“I think in this moment we have to focus on ourselves and to do better or get better results,” Mourinho said.
“I think is very difficult, for example, to go to Stamford Bridge and do better what we did in terms of performance. We had three points in our pocket and left with only one.
“In other matches we should have better results and until end of December we have to focus on what we have in potential, what we have in problems, what we have in quality and try to go.
“Because in this moment we are outside the top four and we have to push hard and to work hard and try to get into this top four position.”
Liverpool to offer Gomez new deal
Liverpool will reward Joe Gomez’s emergence among the Premier League’s elite defenders with a new, improved contract.
The England defender still has three and a half years remaining on his current deal, so there is no urgency to commit to new terms on either side, but the Reds want to recognise a player that manager Jurgen Klopp said is “the future of Liverpool”.
Negotiations are proceeding, with Anfield chiefs confident the centre half will extend on significantly improved terms within months if not weeks.
Klopp is keen to tie up all his best young players on extended, big money deals to secure a nucleus of talent at the club, and he certainly believes Gomez is part of that elite.
Speaking about the England star, he said: “He has a big future here at Liverpool, no doubt about that. Joe is a very important part of the squad and it’s so nice to see.”
Hazard to stay at Chelsea?
Danny Murphy reckons Eden Hazard could snub Real Madrid and end up staying at Chelsea.
“Eden Hazard is the best player in the Premier League and I can see him staying at Chelsea for the long term, if he is offered the right contract,” he told bwin.
“I think his family are happy in London and there’s no guarantee he would get that freedom and happiness at Real Madrid.
“I think Hazard could become Chelsea’s best player in history if he chooses to stay at the club.
“He has conducted himself so well throughout the speculation and the fans love him even more for it.”
Liverpool star Fabinho ‘bored’
Liverpool summer signing Fabinho is reportedly ‘bored’ at the club and is ready to consider a move to Paris St-Germain in January.
Jurgen Klopp beat PSG to signing the midfielder from Monaco in the summer in a £43.7m deal.
But the Brazilian has featured in just two of Liverpool’s ten Premier League games this season, with Klopp admitting he needs time to adjust to his new surroundings.
The Reds already have a wealth of talent in his position, with the likes of Naby Keita, James Milner, Jordan Henderson and Georginio Wijnaldum all seemingly ahead of him.
And French newspaper Le Parisien claim the 25-year-old is already bored with life on Merseyside.
Di Maria to return to Man Utd?
Angel di Maria is one of five players who the bookies reckon could make a switch to Old Trafford this January.
The Argentina international is priced at 5/2 by Coral to make a sensational return to United.
Tottenham defender Toby Alderweireld is the favourite to make a switch to Old Trafford at 6/4.
Toni Kroos, Harry Maguire and Ryan Sessegnon are the other three players on the radar of Jose Mourinho, according to the reports.
Chelsea told to send Kovacic back to Real Madrid
Chelsea should send Mateo Kovacic back to Real Madrid in order to give more playing time to Ruben Loftus-Cheek, according to Martin Keown.
“I honestly believe that had Maurizio Sarri known just how good Ross Barkley and Ruben Loftus-Cheek were, Chelsea would not have taken Mateo Kovacic on loan,” he told the Daily Mail.
“It’s a nice problem for Sarri to have.
“You cannot drop N’Golo Kante so there are three players fighting for one midfield berth.
“If Chelsea had to make a choice between Kovacic and Loftus-Cheek, I would rather send Kovacic back to Real Madrid than send Loftus-Creek out on loan.”
Ramsey’s Arsenal exit latest
Chelsea may abandon plans to sign Aaron Ramsey due to the form of Ruben Loftus-Cheek and Ross Barkley.
The Welshman is out of contract at the end of the season and will leave the Emirates after Gunners chiefs withdrew their initial offer.
Ramsey has been heavily linked with a number of Arsenal’s rivals, including Chelsea, Liverpool and Manchester United.
But Starsport understands the Blues are rethinking any approach.
