What can we do to smooth the way for electric cars in the UK?

What can we do to smooth the road to a UK charging network for electric cars?

Whatever the answer to the green driving revolution is, the government must lead.

I’ve been curious about the government’s choice of charger design after learning about the poor state of planning for installing all of the chargers we’ll need to power millions of electric cars by 2030.

It hopes that the device will become “iconic” – read more about it here and tell us what you think.

Will more detailed plans be enough to allay the concerns of drivers, manufacturers, and local governments?

Connected Kerb announced this week that by 2030, it plans to install 190,000 public charging stations on city streets.

However, this could cost up to £1.9 billion.

There are also other obstacles, as my father, a traffic engineer, pointed out in a message after reading my article.

“Having spent a career designing roads and frequently finding it difficult to install even individual posts and signs,” he wrote, “putting tens of charging points along every road will cause absolutely massive problems.”

“For councils, the government, and car owners, this will be a nightmare.”

“How can we persuade the oil majors to install green hydrogen fuel pumps in all their UK filling stations?” emailed i reader Mike Tiley.

Electric motors are still used in hydrogen fuel cell vehicles.

However, because they are not powered by a battery, they are lighter, increasing range and reducing the release of polluting tyre particles into the atmosphere.

They also take less time to fill than charging a battery.

However, producing hydrogen in an environmentally friendly manner remains a challenge.

For the time being, electric seems to be the best option – as long as the government takes control of chargers.
