In England, higher rates of childcare provision are linked to higher rates of employment for women.

The government must overhaul the childcare sector if we are serious about closing gender pay and wealth gaps and increasing mothers’ earnings.

It can begin by subsidizing childcare for children under the age of two and prioritizing more before and after-school care.

The situation is clearly urgent, but it is unclear when or if the Chancellor will take the necessary steps to improve women’s workplace support.

I hope that one day, childcare will be viewed as critical infrastructure, with adequately subsidized options available to meet the needs of working mothers.

The current system’s inequity harms both mothers and those who want to have children, as well as the economy as a whole.
