2 Weeks After Brian Laundrie’s Remains Were Found, the Sheriff Provides an Update on His Cause of Death

Brian Laundrie’s cause of death has been updated by a Florida sheriff, two weeks after his remains were discovered in a state park.

Sarasota County Sheriff Kurt Hoffman spoke at a law enforcement forum on Friday, praising North Port, Fla., Police Chief Todd Garrison and his team, according to the Sarasota Herald-Tribune.

“We probably talked about 20 times during that situation, and we obviously supported them out in the preserve looking for Brian Laundrie,” Hoffman explained.

“That guy went out there and probably committed suicide by all accounts, and he was right out there where we thought he was,” Sheriff Hoffman continued.

“At the time, there was four feet of water out there.” Laundrie’s family reported him missing on Sept.

Number seventeen.

He left home on September, they told authorities.

14 but never came back.

His disappearance occurred just days after authorities in Wyoming discovered the body of his girlfriend, Gabby Petito.

On September, her family reported her missing.

After nearly two weeks without hearing from her, I called her on November 11th.

Petito and Laundrie, according to reports, left on a cross-country trip in June.

Petito reportedly became less communicative near the end of August before sending one final text on Aug.

Her family doubts the authenticity of the message, believing it may not have been sent by her.

On September 1st, Laundrie returned to North Port.

1 but was reportedly unwilling to help police with their investigation into Petito’s disappearance.

Petito’s death was never officially linked to Laundrie, but he was a person of interest.

Authorities conducted a thorough search for Laundrie and were able to confirm her disappearance on Oct.

His remains were discovered on November 21.

“Getting the news that your child is no longer with you is sad, under any circumstances,” attorney Steven Bertolino, who represents Laundrie’s family, said in a statement published by PEOPLE. “The fact that the Laundries have been subjected to these people out in front of their house for the last four weeks, and they continue to be out there today, makes it all the more difficult.”

Bertolino also addressed Petito’s homicide death, saying, “Today is not the day to discuss the Gabby Petito case,” citing his clients’ “grave loss.”
