Adele’s New Song “Brutally Honest” Has a “Hold On” Message Behind It.

Get your Kleenex ready, because Adele’s new track is going to make you cry.

The 33-year-old singer discusses the “brutally honest” ballad “Hold On,” off her album 30 in a clip from her forthcoming CBS special, One Night with Adele. According to Oprah, the singer had to be in the “dark dark dark hours,” when recording the song, and the lyrics could not be more fitting.

Oprah speaks the following line aloud: “I am a complete disaster. The more I strive, the more I regress. My worst adversary is myself. Right now, I despise being myself. Every day, I fear that the route I am on may suddenly open up and swallow me whole. When I am trying to feel anything at all, how do I feel so small?”

Adele then opened up about the folks who inspired the song’s poignant lyrics. “My friends always would say ‘hold on’ when I would feel like the lyrics in the verse,” she added. “But it was just exhausting trying to like keep going with it.”

She went on to say, “It is a methodical procedure. The divorce procedure. Being a single parent is a difficult journey. When I first became a mother, I had no intention of not seeing my child every single day. Many individuals understand what I am talking about when I say the process of arriving for yourself every day and showing up for yourself every day while still maintaining a home and a business. That is how I am feeling right now. Those were other things I had to juggle. And I felt like I needed to stop doing it and instead try to go on with purpose. Not merely to get out of it for the sake of getting out of it. Walking through all that concreate made my feet hurt.”

Adele, who is the mother of 9-year-old Angelo and had been married to his father, Simon Konecki, for six years, divorced him earlier this year. The Grammy-winning performer will play old hits as well as new songs from her upcoming album during the CBS event.

Adele One Night Only will premiere on CBS on November 14 at 8 p.m. EST/5 p.m. PST.
