D-Generation X’s WWE Theme Was Originally Made for Just Shawn Michaels, According to Jim Johnston

The DX Band’s iconic theme song, “Break It Down,” was one of the most important aspects of D-Generation X’s presentation throughout the faction’s various WWE runs.

However, as Jim Johnston, a legendary former WWE music composer, recently confirmed on the RRBG Podcast, the song was not written specifically for the band.

The song was supposed to belong to just Michaels, according to Johnston, but by the time it was finished, DX had already formed as a group on television.

“It’s often misunderstood because I did write a theme for Shawn Michaels, which was — D-Generation X, which I originally wrote for Shawn Michaels.”

He had hooked up with Hunter by the time it was out there, and it had quickly become a group entity,” Johnston said (ht Fightful).

“Chris Warren, who did the singing, that’s what he did,” he explained, adding, “and I was definitely trying to do something in that style that was the white rock-rapper vibe.”

It was a lot of fun.

The best trivia about that piece of music, in my opinion, is that I got away with something I would never get away with otherwise, which is that — Themes have an — Undertaker bell, boom, music.

Music and a glass break

It’s right in the middle of it.

‘Hey, let’s hang out and have a nice little intro,’ isn’t it?

Chris’ voice, I believe, played a role in my fascination.

With everything he says, he just sneers and says, ‘Go screw yourself.’

He continued, “It’s really just the kick drum.”

“It was playing in the studio while I was doing something else, and I was just sort of thinking, ‘Wait a second.’ It’s amazing how things happen when you’re putting music together.”

Accidents that turn out to be good.

I adore happy accidents.

I wasn’t attempting to compose an introduction.

Here’s the [kick drum], which I left running by accident.

So I’m just getting into the mood for it and I’m starting to say things.

So I made a long loop of it.

‘Chris, with your snide, crazy voice, just repeat everything I say,’ I said as I set up two microphones, one with Chris facing me and the other with me.
