HBO Max Announces New ‘Return to Hogwarts’ Special
Return to Hogwarts is a new reunion special from Warner Bros. to commemorate the 20th anniversary of Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone.
On Tuesday, the company released a teaser for the special, promising that it would air on New Year’s Day — Wednesday, January 1st.
For the time being, it will only be available on HBO Max.
In a series of interviews, conversations, and panels, some of the biggest stars from the Harry Potter franchise, including Daniel Radcliffe, Rupert Grint, and Emma Watson, will mark the 20th anniversary of the Harry Potter franchise.
They’ll look back on the franchise and its legacy, as well as share new anecdotes and behind-the-scenes details.
Director Chris Columbus, as well as cast members Helena Bonham Carter, Robbie Coltrane, Ralph Fiennes, Gary Oldman, Imelda Staunton, Tom Felton, James Phelps, Oliver Phelps, Mark Williams, Bonnie Wright, Alfred Enoch, Matthew Lewis, Evanna Lynch, and Ian Hart, are all expected to attend.
“It’s been an incredible journey since the debut of the Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone film, and witnessing how it’s evolved into this remarkable interconnected universe has been magical to say the least,” said Tom Ascheim, Warner Bros.’ president of young adults and classics.
“From the talented cast and crew who poured their heart and soul into this extraordinary film franchise to the passionate fans who continue to keep the Wizarding World spirit alive 20 years later, this retrospective is a tribute to everyone whose lives were touched by this cultural phenomenon.”
“There’s magic in the air here with this incredible cast, as they all return to the original Hogwarts sets, where they started 20 years ago.”
“Executive producer Casey Patterson added, “The excitement is palpable as they prepare to take their fans on a very special and personal journey through the making of these incredible films.”
In recent years, HBO Max has had a lot of success with reunion specials, such as the West Wing reunion and the Friends reunion.
So far, there’s no indication that this special will feature author JK Rowling or address her divisive public stance on transgender rights.
However, Rowling will almost certainly profit financially from the special’s release as the franchise’s creator.
The film Harry Potter and the 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts will be released on January 20th.
HBO Max premieres on January 1, 2022.
