How Oscars will write history in 2021

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Science’s decision to postpone the Oscars 2021 by two months – from February 28 to April 25 – is not particularly surprising, especially given new spikes in coronavirus cases reported in several states and raise further uncertainties regarding the timing of the film The industry will return to “normalcy”.

But the shift is certainly remarkable for its historical nature.

Next year’s ceremony is only the fourth time that the Oscars have been delayed in their 90-year history – and it’s the longest postponement due to a landslide.

The 1938 Oscars were postponed a week after heavy flooding in Los Angeles. In 1968, they were pushed back two days out of respect for Martin Luther King Jr., who was murdered four days before the originally planned April 8th. In 1981 the ceremony was delayed again, this time by 24 hours. After the assassination attempt on actor Ronald Reagan, who became president, to open the show – a decision that was made just four hours before the original ceremony.

After the actual date change, the most dramatic – and possibly the most controversial – change the Academy had announced was an additional two-month extension to released films.

While the Oscars typically identify nominees from a calendar year pool, the 2021 ceremony will open eligibility for films that will be released by the end of February. Nominations will not be announced until 15 days later on March 15th.

“For more than a century, films have played an important role in comforting, inspiring and entertaining us in the darkest of times. You certainly have this year. We hope to extend the eligibility period and our award date to give the filmmakers the flexibility they need to finish and release their films without being punished for anything beyond anyone’s control, ”said Academy President David Rubin and CEO Dawn Hudson in a statement.

There are several consequences that may arise from the date shifts.

We will certainly see a domino effect at other industry events. The Oscars are the grand finale of the award season. So expect the Golden Globes, all the different guild awards and the Independent Spirit Awards (which always take place on the Saturday before the Oscars) to follow. Within a few hours of the American Film Academy announcing the move to the Oscars, the British BAFTA Awards were postponed from February 14th to April 11th.

This wave effect could also extend to autumn film festivals. Festivals in Venice, Telluride and Toronto, the trifecta of Oscar-Buzz-generating festivals, could be postponed from August and September to later in the autumn. This could also complicate release patterns for films that debut at the Sundance Film Festival in January – which are usually not approved until the following year, but can now be released to cinemas and / or streaming platforms to qualify.

Whatever the true extent and impact of Oscars’ unprecedented move, it is clear that we are approaching an incomparable award season.
