‘I had no idea lads like me could be on Radio 1’, says Jordan North.

Jordan North speaks to Sarah Carson about the future of the BBC, the importance of regional expansion in the media, and why radio will never die as he takes over the drivetime show on Radio 1.

Jordan North’s throat had dried up the first time he spoke on Radio 1.

“Should I script it? Will that sound natural?” “I’m trying to come up with another way to describe it, but I’m shitting bricks,” she says.

It was four o’clock in the morning during the 2014-15 “Crimbo limbo” week.

“I was 24 at the time, and it had been a year since I had heard anything.”

‘No one can take this away from me,’ I thought to myself.

I can always claim to have spent a week on Radio 1.'”

The following Christmas, however, they asked him to fill the same early breakfast slot.

He was soon questioned again and again.

“I gained a reputation as a substitute teacher.”

Every event was covered by me.

I used to lie and pretend to know everything because I figured, ‘I can just Google it.’ Sometimes you have to blag it and hope for the best.”

Today, he and co-host Vick Hope take over the drivetime show from Nick Grimshaw of Radio 1.

“I can’t wait to get started,” he says, promising a “big blast” of energy.

“It’ll stand out like a sore thumb,” says the narrator.

North is known for his boyish enthusiasm.

The 31-year-old has become a household name in the last year.

The first step was taking over the station’s weekend afternoon show, but his appearance on last year’s I’m A Celebrity… Get Me Out Of Here!, where he made his debut by vomiting into a bush on a cliff, has accelerated the process.

His comic vulnerability landed him in almost every trial, and his whimpering mantra “happy place, happy place, Turf Moor” [home of Burnley FC]became a viral catchphrase.

He’s self-deprecating, unfiltered, down to earth, and brotherly on the air, telling stories about losing his wallet, his mother’s new kitchen, and his “picky tea.”

To be good on air, you have to be relatable, he was taught first.

However, there’s more to North than clowning around.
