Idris Elba lifts lid on standalone Luther film – but warns there are ‘no plans’ for sixth season with BBC

Idris Elba revealed a Luther film is “this close” but there are no plans for a sixth season in bittersweet news to fans.

Idris, 47, said while there are no “formal plans” to make a sixth season of the detective drama, a film might not be so far off.

He told Sky News: “I’ve made it very clear that I’d like to see Luther come back as a film.

“And I can tell you this, that we are this close to making a film of Luther.”

Talk of a Luther film has been around for years with Idris admitting two years ago that its writer Neil Cross was “beavering away” on the film script.

He told Metro at the time: “Luther has all the ingredients to echo those classic films of the ’90s like Seven and Along Came A Spider and I think what we’d like to attempt is use that as a blueprint to create it.

“It will be more murder, more Volvos, more frowning Luther.

“Essentially we just want to try and take it to a much bigger remit and scale and perhaps international as well.”

The Wire actor made the comments while promoting the third season his Sky comedy In The Long Run.

Idris is a busy guy, between promoting the comedy and planning to get Luther on the big screen he also runs a wellness brand with wife Sabrina.

The award winning actor has applied for permission to sell dozens of health and beauty products under his lifestyle brand Sable Labs and podcast Coupledom – both of which he runs with wife Sabrina.

The applications were made at the Intellectual Property Office in January, under the name of his top UK firm IE7 Holdings Limited – through which he also runs a music business, clothing company and performing arts firm.

Elba and Sabrina launched their wellness brand in February.

Promising to make it a ‘global community that celebrates partnerships of all kinds – romantic couples, business partners, creative duos, long standing friends, family ties and much more.’

Their trademarks are set to run across two classes and dozens of products.

As well as trademarking the products Elba has applied in his own name to trademark the use of S’able Labs and Coupledom across multiple digital goods and services.

It’s been a big year for the star who contracted coronavirus in March.

He recovered quickly, telling the Associated Press: “I think that the world should take a week of quarantine each year just to remember this time.

“Remember each other. I really do”
