In the opening monologue of Saturday Night Live, Simu Liu gets even with the kid who claimed he wasn’t Spider-Man.

In his opening monologue for his debut as host of Saturday Night Live, Simu Liu got even with a kid who once said he wasn’t Spider-Man! The Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings star has had a busy year thanks to the release of his starring role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe film, and one thing Liu has been open about is his journey to becoming the first Asian superhero in the Marvel extended film canon.

Liu used his first monologue as host of Saturday Night Live to talk about a surprising struggle he’s faced.

Liu not only alluded to his new famous tweet about his pitch to Marvel about an Asian superhero, but he also hinted at a final story as a form of retaliation.

When he mentioned his previous work as a costume actor at a children’s birthday party, he was told he couldn’t play Spider-Man.

Liu became emotional as he explained how this inspired him to fight harder for his best life, and how he was finally able to tell that kid that, yes, he isn’t Spider-Man, but he is Shang-Chi, thanks to it.

He did, however, spice it up a lot more.

It’s a spice you should try for yourself, and you can find it here:

“When I was struggling to make ends meet as an actor, I took on a side job a superhero performer for kids’ birthday parties,” Liu wrote in a heartfelt letter to fans.

“I could be any hero who didn’t show their face directly, because we all know there aren’t any Asian superheroes out there,” Liu said.

“One day, a Batman actress had to cancel at the last minute, so I was called in to fill in.”

I’d never shown my face before and was nervous about the reaction of the kids.

I wasn’t expecting to be so upset when a young Asian boy said, ‘You can’t be Batman! You look like me!'”

“Kid, I promise you, you will never see your superhero onscreen one day,” Liu then promised this same child.

“Every day, I’m working hard to make that happen,” says the monologue.
