John Krasinski Reveals the ‘Office’ Scene He Refused to Film for Fear of Betraying Jim and Pam

On The Office, Jim and Pam’s endearing relationship was a huge part of the show, but actor John Krasinski recently revealed that he refused to film one proposed scene because he was afraid it would betray the characters.

Krasinski revealed that Office creator Greg Daniels pitched a scene in which Jim (Krasinski) would cheat on Pam (Jenna Fischer) by kissing Cathy (Lindsey Broad) in Welcome to Dunder Mifflin: The Ultimate Oral History of The Office, a new book by series actor Brian Baumgartner — who played Kevin Malone.

When Pam went on maternity leave in Season 8 of the NBC comedy, Cathy was her temporary replacement.

In an excerpt from the book, Krasinksi told Baumgartner, “That’s the only time I remember putting my foot down.”

“I remember saying things I never thought I’d say before, like ‘I’m not going to shoot it,'” Krasinski continued.

They are incredibly dedicated.

We’ve treated them with such admiration.

But there comes a point where if you push them too far, they won’t return.

And I believe they will never come back if you show Jim cheating.”

While Krasinski thought this particular direction was too far, he did believe conflict could be used to propel character development.

Pam eventually developed an emotional bond with Brian the boom guy (Chris Diamantopoulos) in Season 9.

“I said, ‘I think we should get borderline separated, and I think we can do it and then come back,'” explained Krasinski.

“He was completely on board with it.”

“I feel like that kind of worry was good in terms of the fans’ engagement,” Daniels said, reflecting on the decision to have Jim and Pam go through a rough patch in their relationship.

“They were very comfortable with the show they were getting,” he continued, “and I needed to worry them that I was going to give them a bad ending so they would be happy when they got a good ending.” Welcome to Dunder Mifflin: The Ultimate Oral History of The Office was released on Tuesday.
