‘Johnny vs Amber’: Everything You Need to Know About the 2-Part Documentary Starring Johnny Depp and Amber Heard

Johnny vs Amber, a new Discovery(plus) documentary series, will examine the breakdown of Johnny Depp and Amber Heard’s two-year marriage — and the ensuing messy legal battle.

The Pirates of the Caribbean actor and the Aquaman actress married in February 2015 and announced their divorce in May 2016.

Heard filed a domestic violence restraining order against Depp after filing for divorce later that month, bringing photographic evidence of the alleged abuse she had suffered.

In court documents filed three years later, the Fantastic Beasts: The Crimes of Grindelwald star “vehemently” denied ever being violent with his ex-wife.

He then accused her of domestic violence.

By focusing on both sides of the story, Johnny vs Amber will investigate what went wrong between the former couple.

According to Discovery, the first part will “introduce Depp’s perspective, describing how he felt he was married to a Machiavellian liar who would stop at nothing to protect her image, before Heard’s episode explains how the actress married the man of her dreams only to see him turn into a violent drug-fueled monster.”

“The series gives us an inside look at the epic battle that fueled the (hashtag)JusticeforJohnnyDepp and (hashtag)IStandWithYouAmberHeard fan campaigns, as well as the very public High Court case that gripped us all,” Clare Laycock, Discovery’s senior VP for planning and insights and head of entertainment, said in a statement, adding that the result is “both engrossing and horrifying.”

Following their 2017 divorce, Depp and Heard have been involved in a contentious legal battle since July 2020, when the 21 Jump Street star was accused of being a “wife beater” by a UK publication.

Depp filed a libel lawsuit against The Sun newspaper in April 2018, citing 14 separate allegations of abuse made by Heard previously.

The actor has repeatedly stated that Heard’s allegations are false, but when she testified in a libel suit in July 2020, the actress went into great detail about the emotional, verbal, and physical abuse she claimed she experienced during their marriage.

A judge ruled in November 2020 that The Sun’s allegations against Depp were “substantially true,” but the Ed Wood star has maintained his innocence and has asked to have the ruling overturned multiple times.

He became president in March 2021.
