KASABIAN frontman Tom Meighan is due in court tomorrow accused of attacking his girlfriend — hours after the band announced he was stepping down.
The group’s statement today said: “Tom has struggled with personal issues that have affected his behaviour for quite some time and now wants to concentrate all his energies on getting his life back on track.”
It said the split was “by mutual consent.”
The singer, 39, is due to appear before Leicester magistrates over the domestic assault accusation.
A source said: “The guys all love Tom dearly, but the current situation is untenable. Sadly parting ways for the time being was the only answer.”
Meighan sent his fans a personal message saying: “Following today’s announcement I just wanted to let you all know that I am doing well.
“I’m in a really good place now. Thanks for all your love and support. I’ll be seeing you all very soon.”
Meighan and guitarist Serge Pizzorno, a childhood friend, were among the band’s founder members in 1997.
The singer, known for his charismatic stage presence, has been dogged by personal problems including drug and alcohol abuse.
He became infamous for outspoken remarks about fellow stars, including Pete Doherty and Justin Timberlake.
It was not clear whether Kasabian will seek a permanent replacement.
Meighan previously admitted to a meltdown in 2016 after he split from his long-term girlfriend Kim James, who moved out with their daughter Mimi Malone.
He said: “I had to sort my head out. My attitude. Stuff I was doing. People I was associating with.
“Not bad people. I was the one that was bad, I was in the haze. I was very unhappy, making myself ill.”
The assault allegation was not believed to relate to Kim.
