KATE Garraway broke down in tears on today’s Good Morning Britain as she said her two children have “effectively lost their dad.”
The broadcaster returned to the show to give an update on critically ill husband Derek Draper’s condition as he continues to fight for his life in intensive care.
She told Piers Morgan and Susanna Reid: “For Darcey and Billy right now, effectively they’ve lost their dad.
“They haven’t, he’s there, they’re talking to him on FaceTime. He can’t respond, but you know he’s not a presence in the way he should be in our lives.”
Upon being taken ill, Derek tried to reassure Kate and their children Darcey, 14, and Billy, 10, he would recover and beat the illness.
“When he went into hospital, I’ve got some texts from him saying, ‘I’m definitely not going to die, I’m getting better, show this picture to the children, tell them I’m doing great,” said Kate.
Derek was struck down with coronavirus 100 days ago and has nearly died six times.
Kate said: “The doctors do keep saying it is a miracle he’s still alive. A doctor who has treated him in two hospitals said ‘he’s as sick as anyone I’ve ever seen in 35 years of medicine’.
“Six times they said he’s not going to make it. He’s been very, very sick.”
The journalist recalled the feeling of terror she felt when Derek’s condition suddenly worsened.
She said: “Suddenly it escalated and they were saying it’s all about the lungs… and then suddenly it became everything, kidney fail, liver fail, heart, everything.
“Each stage it’s been a new terror and just when I thought we were moving forward then suddenly we know it can affect your body everywhere, nerves, everything.”
Despite the severity of his condition, Kate said there are signs of hope.
She said: “The problem is it’s a new disease that no one knows.
“It’s great there’s some flicker of hope. His lungs are starting to recover a little bit, his kidneys are doing better, his liver is doing better. They don’t know how much better he can get. There is just nothing he can compare it with.”
Medics have learned from Derek’s illness and have changed the way they treat patients because of him.
Kate explained: At every stage they’ve been learning. They’ve changed pathways because of Derek. They’re now checking for things earlier on in other patients. Which is a wonderful thing.
“I keep telling him this on FaceTime, he’d be very pleased… it’s also, as the wife, it’s utterly infuriating, he had to be the one that did it.”
A-list stars such as Elton John and David Beckham have done their best to boost Kate and the kids’ spirits.
Kate said: “David Beckham sent some video clips for the children… people have been incredibly lovely.
“Elton John contacted me. He got in touch, he said, ‘Hi Kate, It’s Elton’. I was like, ‘Elton…’ I think we do have a mutual friend. He was like, ‘What can I do to help?’ He said, ‘I’m on board’. He’s incredible. I put the phone down, and I’m like, ‘That was Elton John…’ I said, ‘I think he’s going to help!’”
And from Monday Kate will return to Good Morning Britain alongside Ben Shephard.
@kategarraway This morning we cried for Derek, you are so brave and we are all still rooting for him. Whatever happens beautiful lady you have the support of the nation we are with you on this journey, although we can’t begin to feel how you do. Much love ❤️
It was really emotional. I don’t know how she didn’t break down through the interview. Wish her husband a quick recovery 🙏🏾
Crying watching @kategarraway on @GMB ❤️ looking forward to watching her on Monday with @benshephard 💙
Doctors recommended that Kate kickstart her own life and she believes it will set a good example to the kids.
“I’ve got to get going, I’ve got to come back,” she said. “I don’t want to make it sound like I’m Mother Teresa or anything, everyone’s having to do that, I’m not special or different, everyone’s having to get on with sadness and loss. If I come back we’ll all be in the same boat.”

Earlier this week Kate said her husband had lost a “huge amount of weight” during his battle with coronavirus.
The 53-year-old said he looked “so different” when she saw him during an iPad video call after nurses were forced to shave his face because his beard grew too big.
Speaking to Hello!, Kate explained: “Derek’s lost a huge amount of weight and when the nurse shaved him because his beard had grown so long, he looked so different.”
Referring to their children FaceTiming their dad, she said: “They’d never seen him without stubble or a beard before.
“During their chats, they tell him what they’ve been doing and their sense of humour often shines through.”
Kate revealed in an interview at the weekend that Derek had emerged from his coma after 98 days in hospital and even opened his eyes.
She said: “When medical staff say, ‘Good morning, Derek,’ he sometimes opens his eyes. We and the doctors are doing everything we can so that he can start to recover.”
However, in a rare social media post she also sounded a note of caution, saying the day he returned home having recovered still seemed “very uncertain” amid these “ghastly times”.
She wrote: “The future we are really hoping for , Derek recovering & coming home is not nearly in sight & very uncertain.
“But it feels positive to share how we are trying to keep ourselves going as I know so many are dealing with terrible challenges in all sorts of ways as we all try to emerge from these ghastly times, just as we continue to hope Derek can emerge from his minimum state of consciousness.
“I hope reading this helps in some way . Thank you everyone for your lovely good wishes and for sending me your stories of how you’ve been coping too.”
It was the first time Kate has posted on Instagram since Father’s Day on June 21 when she updated fans on Derek’s condition.
