On Friday (July 24) the sequel to Netflix’s wildly popular original movie, The Kissing Booth, landed on the streaming platform.
The Kissing Booth 2 stars Joey King, Joel Courtney and Jacob Elordi and picks up a few days after the end of the first one.
It follows Elle Evans and her boyfriend Noah Flynn as they try and make their relationship work long-distance.
The movie is based on the books of the same name by author Beth Reekles, who published The Kissing Booth when she was just 17 years old.
Now 25, Beth had been working on the sequel to Elle and Noah’s story for seven years before finally publishing The Kissing Booth 2: Going The Distance in January of this year.
The author, who lives in South Wales, recently answered some of her fans’ most burning questions about the second film in a Q&A on her YouTube channel.
During the video, she revealed which scene in the second book is her favourite – and that scene just so happens to feature in the new movie.
Beth was asked: “Is the Thanksgiving scene going to be in the movie?”
She responded: “The Thanksgiving scene is the reason I wrote the book and it’s really special to me.
Later in the video she explained how after writing the first book, the idea for the Thanksgiving scene popped into her head – and after trying to write it out, she knew it needed to be something more.
“I didn’t want to let [the characters]go, so I wrote the Thanksgiving scene a couple of times over and was like, this doesn’t work, I will need to write the entire sequel in order to have this Thanksgiving scene… so I wrote the entire sequel just because I liked the idea of the Thanksgiving scene.”
Spoilers for the Kissing Booth 2 ahead.
The scene made it into the Netflix adaptation, and sees Elle’s family celebrating Thanksgiving with the Flynn household.
Elle is struggling because neither her best friend Lee, nor his girlfriend Rachel, will talk to her – but she doesn’t know why they’re upset.
Things get even worse when Noah arrives at the dinner, bringing along a girl named Chloe (Amanda in the books) from college, to get back at Elle.
As I’m sure you can imagine, there’s a lot of drama that ensues between the group and not a whole lot of turkey gets eaten.
The scene wasn’t the only thing Beth discussed in her Q&A – she was also asked about the possibility of a third book/movie.
She answered: “Are we having a Kissing Booth 3? This was probably one of the most asked questions I got.
“Don’t get me wrong, I love that you guys love the stories and the movies, but the second one took me seven years to write so please just let me celebrate number two for a while, because I really need that.”
So sounds like she hasn’t totally ruled out writing more… fingers crossed, Kissing Booth fans!
For those keen to read more of Beth’s work, the writer has just announced she has a new book being being published by Wattpad Books.
