Mel Tucker, the head coach of Michigan State football, is set to sign a historic contract.
Mel Tucker, the head coach of Michigan State football, is on the verge of becoming the highest-paid Black coach in American sports.
According to the Detroit Free Press, Tucker is set to sign a (dollar)95 million, 10-year contract extension with Michigan State.
According to Sports Illustrated, if the deal is completed, Tucker will become the highest-paid coach in the Big Ten.
Stanford’s David Shaw earns (dollar)8.9 million as the highest-paid Black head coach in American sports.
Mike Tomlin ((dollar)8 million) of the Pittsburgh Steelers and Doc Rivers ((dollar)8 million) of the Philadelphia 76ers are his closest competitors.
Steve St. John, a Michigan State alumnus, is rumored to be a candidate for the presidency.
The extension is being funded by private donors Andre and Mat Ishbia, who were members of the Spartans’ 2000 national championship basketball team.
Tucker recently appeared on The Draymond Green Show with Draymond Green of the Golden State Warriors.
He mentioned that he wanted to build something significant with the Spartans.
“I made it clear in my initial press conferences that I considered Michigan State to be a destination job, not a stepping stone,” Tucker told ESPN. “It was never my intention to come here and just pass through.”
I believe we’re on the verge of creating something unique.
We’re on the right track, and I’ve got a lot of help here.”
Tucker, 49, was hired by Michigan State last year after a one-year stint as Colorado’s head coach.
Tucker has turned things around for the Spartans, who are now 9-1 and have a chance to win the Big Ten Championship after a 2-5 season in 2020.
As an assistant coach for Ohio State and Alabama, Tucker won two national championships.
He has also worked as an assistant coach for the Jacksonville Jaguars, Cleveland Browns, and Chicago Bears in the National Football League.
According to 247 Sports, Tucker said after the team’s victory last weekend, “This is a team that isn’t entitled.”
“Everything we’ve gotten to this point has been earned, and we’ll have to do it again.”
We’ll have to work extremely hard to earn it, and we’ll have to continue to play with great effort, mental and physical toughness.”
