The Challenges of Razor Fist and the Bus Brawl, according to Shang-Chi Fight Coordinator

Marvel fans have been enamored with the “Bus Fight” since the first trailer for Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings, which featured a few seconds of star Simu Liu fighting several men within the tight confines of a passenger train speeding through downtown San Francisco.

The full scene in the film, as expected, was even more impressive, and many consider it to be one of the best action sequences in the entire franchise.

The more difficult a scene like that looks, the more difficult it was to put together, and Shang-Chi’s bus brawl is no exception.

Fitting several fighters into a small space was a challenge, made even more difficult by the fact that Florian Munteanu, who plays Razor Fist, is a massive man.

Furthermore, Munteanu is a traditional boxer who has had to learn to fight with a fictitious knife in his hand.

Andy Cheng, the fight coordinator, and the rest of the stunt team, fortunately, were up to the task.

ComicBook.com spoke with Cheng about putting the film’s more difficult fights together for Shang-Chi’s VOD release this week, and he opened up about the factors that made the bus scene such a unique challenge.

“Florian as Razor Fist is a boxer, but we need to train him to use the weapon, and the weapon isn’t in his hand right now,” Cheng explained.

“As a result, he had to imagine the blade and how long it was.

We had to make the green slate so he could tell how far away Shang-Chi, Simu, was.

We had a lot of training, so we need to make sure of those things to ensure that everyone is very fit.”

“It’s a little difficult for Florian because he’s used to boxing and now he’s fighting with the weapon.”

Then he had to figure out how to move with the other hand, so he had to adjust.

Also, because the bus is so small with all the hand-pulls and then the passengers, his head is already touching the ceiling just standing there.

He’s a huge guy, so imagine the big guy crammed into a small box, and he’s had to do all the moves himself.

It’s difficult for him, so we did a lot of rehearsal with him.

We had no choice but to load him onto the bus…
