The First Gilded Age Trailer Showcases America’s Own Downton Abbey

In HBO’s new period drama The Gilded Age, Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski want to protect New York society from new money.

Here’s the first teaser for the film.

No, we’re not talking about Downton Abbey.

The Gilded Age, a new period drama from Julian Fellowes for HBO, debuted its first trailer on Thursday, Nov.

Number eighteen

Fellowes has swapped the Crawleys’ English estate for 1880s New York, where old money society holds on to power despite the rise of the nouveau riche.

The new drama, which premieres in January, is based on the novel of the same name by the same author.

Following the death of her father, New York newcomer Marian Brook (Louisa Jacobson) moves to the city to live with her high society aunts (Cynthia Nixon and Christine Baranski).

Marian’s Aunt Agnes remarks in the first glance, “I need to make one thing clear.”

“My dear, power belongs to old New York.

Never, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever, ever

“The old have been in charge since before the revolution—until the new people invade it,” Agnes says as footage shows the rise of wealthy rivals.

While Agnes appears adamant in her convictions, Aunt Ada adds, “It’s not quite as simple as that.”

It is for Aunt Agnes!

Marian doesn’t seem keen on following her aunts’ advice, as HBO teases a battle between the old money gatekeepers and “a ruthless railroad tycoon and his ambitious wife,” played by Morgan Spector and Carrie Coon, respectively.

“Will Marian follow the established rules of society, or forge her own path?” the network’s description continues.

We’re in for a pearl-clutching good time if Gilded Age is anything like Downton Abbey.

For those who missed it when it was on, Downton Abbey was a British period drama that aired for six seasons from 2010 to 2015 and won a slew of awards, including an Emmy for Outstanding Miniseries or Movie in 2011.

The Gilded Age will premiere on Monday, January 14th.
