Towie cast return to filming with temperature checks, social distancing and loads of hand sanitiser on set

THE cast of The Only Way Is Essex have returned to filming today, with temperature checks, social distancing and hand sanitiser all required on set.

Filming for the hit ITVbe show was previously put on hold in March due to the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

However, cast have since returned to shoot the upcoming series in Essex.

Show newbies Ella Rae Wise, Kelsey Stratford and Tom McDonnell were spotted filming the show with the help of crew members, who wore protective face shields.

The trio were required to take part in temperature checks ahead of filming.

They were also pictured adhering to social distancing guidelines, with Kelsey and Ella donning vibrant gym wear for the occasion.

Tom – who stood a safe two metres from his co-stars – was also in activewear as they took part in an outdoor workout scene.

Cast and crew members were also provided with hand sanitiser on set.

ITV bosses decided to delay production on the new series back in March.

A source revealed at the time: “There have been lengthy discussion with the cast, and it just wouldn’t have worked without a busy social scene and going to clubs and their shops.

“So bosses have decided to wait until later in the year when the crisis has calmed down a bit. It’s not worth the risk.”

A set source added: “Towie relies on signature set pieces and glossy events, set in glamarous locations around Essex and involves a big cast of regulars and extras.

“It’s also about friendships and relationships, so the social lives of our cast members are at the heart of the show.”

They continued: “In light of the current guidance from the Public Health England and the World Health Organisation to practice social distancing, the best thing to do to keep our cast and crew safe and secure as possible would be to postpone filming.

“We look forward to Towie returning later in the year when it will celebrate its tenth birthday.”

Towie is set return this autumn for its ten-year anniversary series with “old and new faces.”

The Sun Online previously revealed the long-awaited special episodes will feature surprise visits from Towie favourites from the past decade.

Fans have 18 brand new episodes to look forward to when it arrives on TV screens later this year.

Head of Unscripted for Lime Pictures Sarah Tyekiff told us: “We are so excited to get the iconic Towie back on people’s screens, twice a week, for what is going to be a huge Anniversary season.

“It’ll be back with a bang to celebrate 10 phenomenal years with our amazing cast and see the return of some very familiar faces.

“What happens in Essex, won’t stay in Essex!”
